How to Find the Best Hiking Trails for Your Getaway House Weekend
One of the best parts of our weekend away with Getaway was its proximity to Shenandoah National Park. I’ve been trying to do more outdoor workouts this summer and this escape offered a great opportunity to get some hiking in.
While Getaway offers tips with nearby hiking trails to try, I wanted to see for myself what was out there and fit best with what we were looking for on our adventure day. Thankfully, a friend introduced me to All Trails, an awesome website that lets you find hiking trails across the country. The website lets you filter down by park, difficulty level, and other features (e.g. dog or kid friendly) and gives you directions on how to easily access the trail head as well as user comments about what to expect on the hike. (The reviews for our hike warned of rattlesnakes and we did end up seeing one so it was nice to be prepared!)
From scouring All Trails, I was able to locate a hike that was exactly what I was looking for – not too far a drive, medium difficulty, with a waterfall at the end. We ended up hiking South River Falls trail, which was great – it took us about 2.5 hours (probably longer than most because Caleb was filming this 😊 ) and had great scenery and just the ride amount of rock scrambling. We also got to cross the Appalachian Trail early on in the hike, which was cool.
So – whether you’re going to Great Falls or Yosemite, consider checking out All Trails for your next hiking adventure!
(AND don’t forget your mosquito repellent bracelets – especially if you’re going on a hike with a lot of water!)
